Rakuten is new patron of the British Fashion Council – supporting London Fashion Week 2021
Already the headline sponsor of Rakuten Fashion Week TOKYO, Rakuten has now become a Patron of the British Fashion Council (BFC), an organization that promotes British fashion internationally through fashion weeks, exhibitions, and showcasing events.
Internet giant Rakuten was among the first players in the digital world. Bit by bit, and certainly by facing unpredictable challenges, the fashion industry continues to digitize and Rakuten is doubling down on its support for the world of fashion.
Rakuten and the Fashion Business
Rakuten has been growing its fashion footprint consistently throughout the past years.
- ShopStyle, a leading fashion and lifestyle platform for influencers and consumers, is part of the Rakuten Group since 2017.
- Rakuten has been a member of the European Commission’s first memorandum of understanding to fight counterfeits.
- In 2019, Rakuten has become the partner of the Japan Fashion Week Organization and was the headline sponsor for Rakuten Fashion Week TOKYO.
Empowering businesses and industries has been part of Rakuten’s DNA since its founding. It is no surprise that Rakuten puts its digital knowledge into action. By launching its “Rakuten Fashion” strategy in 2019, Rakuten aims to promote the global fashion scene and to become a facilitator of exchange between cultures, designers, and events.

Patron of the British Fashion Council (BFC)
The BFC organized the London Fashion Week in 2021, which is one of the “Big Four” international Fashion Weeks, next to New York, Milan, and Paris. By being a patron, Rakuten supported the (digital) London Fashion Week this year, as well as supporting BFC in its efforts to deliver significant and impactful programs that benefit the industry.
Encouraging Innovation
Ryo Matsumura, Rakuten Executive Officer and E-Commerce Company Vice President commented, “I am delighted that Rakuten will partner with the British Fashion Council to encourage innovation, create excitement, and empower fashion brands and designers from the U.K. and around the world. Fashion is an important growth category within Rakuten’s e-commerce business. We look forward to working alongside our new partner to support a diverse fashion scene and a successful circular fashion economy through events like London Fashion Week.”
